From Me, With Love

Hi all,

So, my throat is sore and my head is spacey, and ironically this is making it difficult for me to focus on the book I have with me, called The Body in Pain, by Elaine Scarry. Instead, I think I will make a nice survey for you to take, if you feel so inclined. And I will answer my own questions now, so as to be fair and not pave a road with good intentions like the last time.

1. Close your eyes. Turn your head slightly to the right. Open them. What do you see? A white table, chairs with gray cushions, a sign detailing what is prohibited in Cabot Science Library.

2. Are you reading a good book now? What is it? I am almost done with Midnight's Children by Salman Rushdie, but can't quite bring myself to finish it. I think this is because it is the last novel I have to read for class, and beyond that it's all scholarly stuff. Not that I'm not reading the scholarly stuff now, but somehow this is psychologically relevant.

3. It's 2008. Do you believe this? Not really. I mean, I get the date right when I write it down or something, but I think sometimes I still believe it is 2004, when I graduated Bryn Mawr. I don't know why, but when I pick up a book or something that was written in 2004, I'm always like, wow, that's really new... wait... it's not.

4. Do you want to do a paper about Christian tattoos as icons? No.

5. Is it abnormally warm today where you live? Yes!

6. Have you ever been in a serious physical fight? Tell me about it. Why did it happen? What did it feel like? If you've been in many, pick one. I have not been in a serious physical fight. I have been in play-fights, and they feel like there's this energy I always carry that is suddenly focused, absorbed, and released.

7. Can you see out a window right now? If so, describe the first person you see out the window. If there's no person, or no window, tell me who is not there. I see a woman in a denim jacket with red-brown hair, walking on the rock fountain with a child who is out of view. I was going to make up a story about her, but it seems suddenly disrespectful.

8. What is right in front of you that you love? Right now I feel warmly toward this man sitting in a chair with his hands interlaced on top of his bald spot. He is wearing a tan jacket, a button down shirt of an indescribable browny-gray color, and a watch.

9. What is right in front of you that you find perplexing? I am perplexed by two small squares of velcro affixed to the circulation desk.

10. Are you tired? Yes.

11. When is the last time you made a conscious decision to lie? Why did you do so? It was a couple of weeks ago. I did it to preserve a man's good opinion of me across difficulties of language, culture, religion, sexual mores, etc. I did it to make my life easier. I don't know if it has or not.

12. What worries you right now? I am worried because I feel like I have a cold or something, and I need to be healthy when I go to Baltimore. I am worried about my school work. I am worried about the future.

13. What pleases you right now? I am pleased to be wearing shoes, not boots. I am pleased by the feel of the rim of the little garbage can against the arches of my feet. I am pleased that my shift is over in 45 minutes. I am pleased by seeing Charlotte every day, and I am pleased to be home with Rachel and Amy. In a general sense, not right at this moment, clearly.

14. What can you hear right now? Security guards discussing politics. It's interesting.

15. What (approximately) was happening in your life 5 years ago? I was 20 years old... I was still in Europe, I think, travelling with Rachel and Katie. Now I want to look up and see exactly where we were, or if we were coming back yet. I'm going to guess that it was a later part of the trip, perhaps Berlin or Paris or Dublin. Was it in Ireland that Katie told us about this blackcurrent ale or cider or something? And we got some in a pub? I remember the way the streets looked in Dublin, somehow, more than anything else. And I remember that statue of Oscar Wilde. That was in Dublin, right?

16. Has anything fundamentally changed about your emotional life since then? That's a hard question. But I have no one to blame for it but myself. I think I'm on a little more of an even keel than I was then, but fundamentally... I'm not sure that anything is fundamentally changed. Or, I think the way I understand my emotions is a bit different, but the sensations themselves are not, really. Oh... I have noticed that I am much more easily moved by things than I used to be. I find myself tearing up over lots of things, on TV or whatever, that never would have produced such a reaction before. I don't know why that is, but I think it has something to do with getting older, having a range of experiences that stretch out to contact more than they could before, and... something I can't describe, something about a broader awareness of just how vulnerable we are, of just how bad things can be. (That doesn't explain what I want to explain at all, and sounds weird. But still.)

17. Do you have any secret that you have never told anyone, at all, ever, even anonymously? I honestly didn't think so as I was writing that, but now I am thinking of things that I don't think I ever told anyone. However, I don't have anything that is a constant presence with me, that I have never told anyone, at all, ever, even anonymously.

18. Have you ever hugged a book? Yep.

19. Thrown one across the room? Yep.

20. Hit one? Yes.

21. Kissed one? I think so.

22. Destroyed one on purpose? No.

23. Yelled at one? Yes.

24. Refused to continue reading at one point due to a moral objection to certain events, but then just had to get back to it? Would I make up such a question if the answer was no? It was The Witching Hour by Anne Rice.

25. Have you done all those things to other people? I have not thrown a person across the room, nor destroyed one on purpose. And... this is interesting... I don't think I have ever explicitly refused to associate with someone because of moral objections. I think the only people I have had deep, sincere, lasting moral objections to with regard to their behavior have not been my friends. What does this mean?

26. What is the strangest thing you have ever hugged? Probably a dumbwaiter. It was a big one.

27. Kissed? A locker.

28. The very first time you were enamoured of someone, what did you do in immediate reaction? I ran weird circles around my room, sort of jumping over my bed, listening to an a capella tape of "For the Longest Time" and singing.

29. Name something unusual that had some influence in your sexual development. Lucius Cornelius Sulla.

30. And something cliched? Spin the Bottle. But I wasn't playing, really.

31. How about a minor guilty secret? Doesn't have to be about sex, just something not-huge that bugged you. Hmm... I never bought Annie on my Mind, in high school, even though I wanted to read it, because I didn't want the cashier to think I was a lesbian. And I thought that was dumb, especially since I was often buying books with gay men in them. But I still didn't buy it.

32. What about a small act of heroism? There was this man lying in the alleyway beside Merriam Theater, and everybody was sort of uncomfortably hoping he was ok and not dead and not in serious trouble, and I finally just went out myself and woke him up and made sure he was alright. That's pretty small, but it felt like kind of a big deal when everybody was older than me and technically more experienced in life.

1. Where were you when the ball dropped for 2006?

Beauty Bar! NYC... Me too, so I'll stick with Julia's answer. See relevant journal entry for details.

2. How did you get the idea for your livejournal name?

Well, Becky just came to me in a flash of wild inspiration, but if we're talking about the "transubstantiatedchicken" part, see my second post ever (I think). Just a bit of clever and tongue in cheek, yet based-on-a-true-story piety.

3. What time were you born?

I think it was around 6 AM, but I never remember.

4. What song are you playing now, or wish you were playing?

For some reason, exactly as I looked at this question, Age of Aquarius popped into my head. Who am I to argue with fate? Except I would.

5. Has the death of a celebrity ever made you cry?

I don't know. I guess that's a no? But I feel like there were some that affected me rather strongly.

6. What color underwear are you wearing?

Julia said: "but about 2 hours ago i had purple cheetah spots ;-)" I find this interesting, because I have purple cheetah spots right now.

7. Do you want a baby?

I... think so. But I'm never sure. Though yesterday at the Y there was this cute child and I was like, wow, that would be great, to have a kid. And then today I was fantasizing about being a foster mom, but that was more a response to hearing about some horrible things in the system of foster care and feeling helpless. Though it has crossed my mind before.

8. What did you do this morning?

Got up way too early-- in the sense of not wanting to do it, not in the sense of having tons of time to get ready, and came to work, where I do... work, and also things like this.

9. What does your dad do for a living?

He's a nurse's aide in a nursing home.

10. What ended your last relationship(s)?

I've never had a "relationship" the way this question is asking... I'll second Julia's answer, although Mark definitely is tenaciously pursuing a relationship, and I'm not sure what to do about that. Other than that, I've had a few fairly intense crushes, some ending with a whimper and some with a bang. Sort of.

11. Do you have a date for Valentines?

Katie said she'd be my date, though I don't know what we're doing, and it's probably in the middle of the week.

Was it Gogol Bordello? I guess so!

Charlotte and Maddie and Rachel and Alex... that was it, right?

No one that I know personally in any kind of intense way. I'm on an even keel right now. Or maybe I just can't think of them at this current time.

I sort of really want a hot dog for lunch, even though I'm trying not to eat the cheap unhealthy stuff anymore.

18. Did you dream last night?

I think so, but I don't recall specifics.

19. What was the last TV show you watched?

Lost, I think.

Probably my Bryn Mawr ring. I'm also very enamored of my two new necklaces.

A cookie that said what girl scouting is all about.

Probably Nathaniel. :) I've been out of touch with the opposite sex for awhile, but he's still a wonderful friend.

"He takes off her dress now... I just can't look, it's killing me..." It played on my clock radio this morning and it sort of keeps cycling through my head at random intervals.

24. Are you on any meds?

Yes, good old prevacid.

25. What side of the bed do you sleep on?

I often start off on one side and end up on the other. But I guess the far side gets more use, over all.

26. What shirt are you wearing?

Good old zoo shirt and good less old stripey sweater. I just realized that the zoo shirt is what I wore when I took the plane to Spain junior year, and the stripey sweater was a staple of my wardrobe there, by which I mean I wore it several times a week.

27. What is your favorite frozen treat?

ICE CREAM! Preferably Breyer's mint chocolate chip, but almost any ice cream is wonderful and desired.

28. How many tattoos/piercings do you have?

Standard ear piercings, just once.

29. What's your favorite store?

This I have answered 25,000 times.

30. Are you thirsty right now?

A bit, but not as much as I have been lately.

31. Can you imagine yourself ever getting married?

Sometimes, it seems like a great idea. Sometimes not. So I guess we'll see.

Dannah. Roz. Bekah. Liz. Gee, there are lots, really.

Watched a bit of The Silver Chair, talked to Bekah and Lilah on the phone, and Julia and Maddie online, and did not really do my financial stuff at all...

Certainly.

Trouble like mischief? Yes.

Do you know, I don't really know in general what songs make people think of me.

If you mean the person(s) with whom I had the displeasure of a breakup without the pleasure of dating... well, you know, it's sort of unclear, actually. Now that I set up that whole interesting linguistic thing... I'll have to think about it.

38. What is one thing you wish you were better at?

Only one? Perhaps taking romantic risks (even in terms of approaching strangers) when I really want to.

39. What hurts you?

Knives.

40. Do you like the person who posted this last?

Not really, I'm just using her for sex. Hmmm. Perhaps I'd better think about this deal, in fact, because it seems to me I'm not getting my fair share of the bargain. ;) Oh, ok, yes, you caught me, I like her!

The Kite Runner - Khaled Hosseini - I've heard a lot about this lately, but somehow it never includes what it's about.
The Lovely Bones - Alice Sebold - I started listening to this one as an audio book when Rachel sent me the CDs, but something went wrong with them and I never finished. I should just borrow it from Rachel.
Slaughterhouse 5 - Kurt Vonnegut - Aside from a short story I don't recall, I have read no Vonnegut at all.
Angels and Demons - Dan Brown - Another one I should read to sort of catch up with popular culture, or something, but will I?
Fight Club - Chuck Palahniuk - Ok, I don't really know if I'll read this one, but I'd be interested to see how it's presented.

Wuthering Heights - Emily Bronte - I had such a strange relationship with this book. I read it about three times over, never actually deciding if I liked it or not, but always sort of mysteriously called back to it.
Brave New World - Aldous Huxley - I remember some of the images really clearly.
American Gods - Neil Gaiman - Read once, thought, eh, it was pretty good. Read again in Spain and fell in love. Sometimes it's all in the timing.
Ender's Game (The Ender Saga) - Orson Scott Card - Many have recommended this one; Morgan, I think, most vehemently.
Snow Crash - Neal Stephenson - Here he is again.
A Prayer for Owen Meany - John Irving - One of the few books I would call practically perfect. The kind I feel in my chest when I think about, like somebody I love.
The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe - C.S. Lewis - Oh, only about 400 times. As any dedicated reader knows, this one shaped my whole cosmological outlook and vocabulary and, well, everything.
Middlesex - Jeffrey Eugenides - This one I have an active desire to read.

Tolkien- I always had a strange relationship with these, since everyone assumed that as an avid reader who liked fantasy, I must have read them, and was shocked when I hadn't. I still haven't, but since I've seen all the movies and, now, bought a $5 book with the whole trilogy in it, I guess one of these days I actually will.
Jane Eyre - Charlotte Bronte - Reacted with more unambiguous pleasure than to her sister's book... even thinking about it now I get a very pleasant feeling, and a memory of excellent writing. But I don't think I've read it so many times as Wuthering Heights, nor that the characters are so present to me, for all that.

My last best friend with a necklace was Dannah, and we swore vows and everything. I miss her. But I have wonderful best friends now, too.

First date?:	I get a little confused about this, because I had a datelike thing to a play, but we never called it a date, and maybe it was just wishful thinking on my part... but that was in high school, maybe sometime sophomore year? And then I had a date for the Ball, though it was not intended romantically. But if we're going to be absolutely certain, I guess it was last year, with this Italian guy I picked up in Rittenhouse Square.
First kiss?:	I was... 14, I think, and at a party. I've told this story before, I think in another survey in this very blog. But we--or, they, I was too nervous--were playing spin-the-bottle, and this strange, troubled, desireable boy spun, and it pointed at me, even though I wasn't in the circle, and he crouched there like a cat, and sprang across the circle and touched his lips to mine... and it was a sudden, small spark of energy between us, and I was very relieved to have gotten kissed before I turned 16, which for some reason was this big deal in my head.
